France AgriMer’s international wine markets overview.
France AgriMer presented the findings of a study at Vinexpo 2013, according to which Europe remains at the forefront of world wine markets, even if the New World is still gaining ground. While Europe accounted for 69.1% of all the wine consumed in the world in 2000, the European share today has reduced to 63.4%.
The American portion of this worldwide market increased from 19.7% in 2000 to 21.9% in 2011, while that of Asia grew from 6.6% to 9.2%. France AgriMer also looked at production : while Europe covers 56% of the total world winegrowing area, Asia recently reached a share of 23.1%, compared to 18.4% in 2000.
America increased from 11.3% in 2000 to 13.2% today. However, Europe is still the leading wine exporter with a 73.6% share of all wine exports worldwide.
With regard to competitiveness, Italy leads according to a dashboard of 60 indicators ranging from brand recognition to labour costs, followed by France and the US, but Argentina and Chile are catching up.
